St. Joseph’s Hospital, (CAMP HOSPITAL)

A hospital as well as a school was the felt need of Ram Colony Camp in 1970s, according to Mr. Hari Singh, Dr. Narayani’s husband- a Tamilian family settled in Hoshiarpur at that time and few other important personalities of the area. They conveyed this idea to the then sister superior, Rev. Sr. Alicia, St. Joseph’s convent Jalandhar and invited the sisters to come and see a plot. The sisters found the plot unsuitable for the purpose. At that time the priest in-charge of Hoshiarpur was Rev. Fr. Thomas Kalapura from Jalandhar diocese. The above mentioned well wishers then introduced father and sisters to Mr. Harbans Singh Sardar, Babuji as he was called by sisters, a well-known person of the locality , our generous benefactor, welcomed whole-heartedly their proposal and immediately expressed his willingness to donate 5 acres of land for the very purpose. The whole situation, after study was found conducive to start the above said apostolates. Registration of the land was done on 28/08/1970.

On a bright Wednesday evening, 21st April 1971, the foundation stone of the hospital building was laid by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Alban Swarbrick, the then Prefect Apostolic of Jallandhar diocese.
The ground floor of the hospital building was completed and it was blessed on 19th January 1972.

St. Joseph’s dispensary started working on 22nd December 1972 under the able guidance and care of Sr. Francina CMC and Dr. Choudhary as a visiting doctor.

Our Province/Management

The 16th of July 1958 is a red-letter day in the annals of the Church of Punjab. It was on that memorable day, the first missionaries of the Third Order Of Carmelites Discalced (TOCD), today known as the Congregation Of Mother Of Carmel (CMC) started their journey towards Jalandhar – the cradle of CMC mission, thus the birth of CMC mission on 20th July 1958. The pioneers were Sr. Angel Mary, Sr. Celine, Sr. Alfred and Sr. Reena. God has abundantly blessed the efforts of the pioneer CMC missionaries in North India. And this is because they believed that what they were doing in Punjab was God’s mission, not their mission. The beginning was small, difficult and tribulations many – learning the language, adapting to the culture, primitive conditions, extreme climates, limited resources. Yes, the pioneers believed in the providence of God and also in the generosity of the people. The Church authorities of the time also have looked upon this new venture with enthusiasm. This CMC mission celebrated it’s Silver Jubilee in 1983 and Golden Jubilee in 2008. And by then CMC mission had established in various cities and states , like, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Dheena, Lambapind, Panchkula, Meerut, Kutch etc. Today the first CMC mission province is known as PUSHPARAM province with 224 members and 35 convents.
